About the Research & Debate skill

- The Research & Debate skill comes with The Sims 4 Discover University Expansion Pack, and is a 10 level skill.
- Elder, Adult, Young Adult, and Teen Sims can all build this skill.
- This skill is essential for completing the Academic Aspiration. Completing this Aspiration can help your Sim start out at a higher level in many careers.
- At level 10 of this skill, Sims can Give Professional Commentary at the podium to earn Simoleons.
- If you own The Sims 4 Get Famous Expansion Pack, this will also earn your Sim Fame.
How to build Research & Debate skill
There are multiple ways for your Sim to build the Research & Debate skill. Some interactions are only unlocked when your Sim reaches a certain level.Buy The Daring Debater Podium Set from Build Mode. If you don’t want to buy one, you can visit Darby’s Den in the University of Britechester Neighborhood to use one. Select the Podium and choose Practice Debating. Once your Sim reaches level 2 of this skill, they’ll unlock the Debate a Topic option at the podium. Some of the options will be grayed out until your Sim has researched the topic using the Electromagnetic Research Archive Machine, or until they reach a certain level of skill. Your Sim can debate these topics. Researching some of these can also build other skills at the same time.

Sims can use the research computer to build skill by researching or prepping for debates. You can buy the Electromagnetic Research Archive Machine from Build Mode. With the research computer, your Sim can Prep for Debate or Research specific topics. Once they reach level 6, they can Contribute Knowledge depending on which skills they’re high in. Doing this will earn them Simoleons. If you don’t want to buy one, you can visit the following Lots in Britechester to use one:Once your Sim becomes a Senior Member of the Debate Guild, the TY84 Gold Plus Research Archive Machine unlocks in Build Mode.

- Laurel Library in the Gibbs Hill Neighborhood
- Larry’s Lagoon in the Foxbury Institute Neighborhood.
Select a mirror and choose Practice Debate to build skill.
To join the Debate Guild, your Sim must first be enrolled in a University. For tips on how to enroll, check out our video for help.Once your Sim is enrolled in University, there are a few ways to sign up to join an Organization. The Organization Events will show upcoming Events, including their place and time. Select Go to Event once it’s not grayed out (the option becomes available once the Event is on) to travel to the Event. Once there, your Sim can ask another member if they can join the Organization.
- Select the University Kiosk—you’ll find these around campus outside the Commons. Then, choose Get University Info > Organization Events.
- Open the Social Groups Panel in the bottom right of Live Mode. Select Organizations, then select Organization Events.
Reading skill books will work towards building skills, but it's slower than other methods. Books will only get you as far as level 9 of a skill. To buy skill books:The skill books are:
- 1Select a bookshelf and choose Purchase Books.
- 2In the pop-up, select the drop-down at the top-left that reads Show All.
- 3Choose Skill and scroll through to find the book you want to buy. These will be added to your Sim’s bookshelf.

- Research & Debate Vol 3: Knowledge is Power.
If you own The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure Game Pack, the Peace and Quiet Lot Trait helps your Sim build skill faster when reading skill books.
With The Sims 4 Discover University Expansion Pack, your Sim can attend skill-building classes. These are rabbit-holes, so your Sim will leave the Lot for some time and then come back when the class is over. Note: Skill Classes are only available between 9 a.m.– 9 p.m.
- 1In Live Mode, select your Sim’s phone.
- 2Open the Business app (the briefcase icon).
- 3Choose Sit in on Skill Class (§250).
- 4In the pop-up menu, choose Research & Debate. Your Sim will leave the Lot and gain the skill while at the class.
If you own The Sims 4 Businesses & Hobbies Expansion Pack, your Sim can learn or teach the Research & Debate skill using the Sharing is Caring Whiteboard. You’ll find this in Build Mode.
Research & Debate skill levels
As your Sim builds the Research & Debate skill, they’ll unlock new abilities and interactions along the way. A green progress bar will appear above your Sim’s head and gradually fill up as they’re building a skill. You can also check their progress by:- 1Entering Live Mode.
- 2Selecting the Sim Panel (bottom left).
- 3Selecting the Skills tab.
At this level, your Sim can Practice Debate at the Podium Pair.
At this level, your Sim can:
- read books faster
- Debate a Topic at the Podium Pair.
At this level, your Sim can:
- complete homework faster
- Prepare for Debate using the Electromagnetic Research Archive Machine
- convince other Sims to Bathe
- convince other Sims to Do a Keg Stand.
At this level, your Sim can:
- gain more study progress when studying
- research more skills on the Electromagnetic Research Archive Machine.
At this level, your Sim can:
- be more persuasive when convincing other Sims
- convince other Sims to Do their Homework
- convince other Sims to Cook meals
- mentor other Sims in the Research and Debate skill.
At this level, your Sim can:
- complete University Presentations and Term Papers faster
- Contribute Knowledge on the Electromagnetic Research Archive Machine.
At this level, your Sim can:
- Convince other Sims to Clean
- Convince roommates thinking of moving out to Stay
At this level, your Sim can:
- Write Research Papers
- Publish Research Papers
- gain skills faster when reading skill books.
At this level, your Sim can:
- convince other Sims to Go Streaking
- convince Boss to Give Bonus over the phone.
At this level, your Sim can:
- have a Professional Debate using the Podium Pair
- Give Professional Commentary at the Podium.
Research & Debate skill cheats
When using skill cheats, type in the number of the level you want to reach. For example, putting stats.set_skill_level major_researchdebate 7 into the cheat bar will get your Sim’s Research & Debate skill up to level 7.PC and Mac
