Overview
The Violin skill in The Sims 4 lets your Sims create music, unlock special social interactions, and perform for others. In this guide, you’ll learn how to build the skill quickly, discover what each level unlocks, find cheats, and maximize your Sims’ musical potential.
About the Violin skill
- The Violin skill comes with The Sims 4 Base Game, and is a 10 level skill.
- Child Sims will also gain the Creativity skill as they build the Violin skill. For more info on how Child skills work, check out our guide.
- Elder, Adult, Young Adult, Teen, and Child Sims can all build this skill.
- The following Traits won’t help your Sim build this skill faster, but are helpful when building the Violin skill:
- Creative Trait: These Sims are inspired more often, Share Creative Ideas with other Sims, and become upset if they’re not creative for a period of time
- Music Lover Trait: These Sims gain powerful Moodlets and boost their Fun Need when Listening to Music and become Happy when playing instruments.
- Looking for a side hustle? If your Sim performs on non-residential Lots like a Bar or Lounge, they can earn tips!
- Performing in public will also boost your Sim’s Fame level if you own The Sims 4 Get Famous Expansion Pack.
- The Great Acoustics Lot Trait increases how fast your Sim builds this skill.
How to build the Violin skill
Some interactions are only unlocked when your Sim reaches a certain level of skill.The quickest way to build this skill is to pick up a violin and start playing! There are a few to choose from in Build Mode.
- These violins can be used by Teens and older: Stringvarius Violin and The Virtuoso Violin.
- The Amateur Hour Child’s Violin and the True Prodigy Child’s Violin can only be used by Child Sims.
Using the computer, select Web > Research > Research the Violin.
Reading skill books will work towards building skills, but is slower than other methods. Books will only get you as far as level 9 of a skill. To buy skill books:The skill books are:
- 1Select a bookshelf and choose Purchase Books.
- 2In the pop-up, select the drop-down at the top-left that reads Show All.
- 3Choose Skill and scroll through to find the book you want to buy. These will be added to your Sim’s bookshelf.

If you own The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure Game Pack, the Peace and Quiet Lot Trait helps your Sim build skill faster when reading skill books.
If you own The Sims 4 Discover University Expansion Pack, your Sim can attend skill-building classes. These are rabbit-holes, so your Sim will leave the Lot for some time and then come back when the class is over. Note: Skill Classes are only available between 9 a.m.– 9 p.m.
- 1In Live Mode, select your Sim’s phone.
- 2Open the Business app (the briefcase icon).
- 3Choose Sit in on Skill Class (§250).
- 4In the pop-up menu, choose Violin. Your Sim will leave the Lot and gain the Violin skill while at the class.
If you own The Sims 4 Businesses & Hobbies Expansion Pack, your Sim can learn or teach the Violin skill using the Sharing is Caring Whiteboard. You’ll find this in Build Mode.
Violin skill levels
As your Sim builds the Violin skill, they’ll unlock new rewards, abilities, and interactions along the way. A green progress bar will appear above your Sim’s head and gradually fill up as they’re building a skill. You can also check their progress by:- 1Entering Live Mode.
- 2Selecting the Sim Panel (bottom left).
- 3Selecting the Skills tab.
At level one, your Sim can Practice Music using a violin.
At this level, your Sim can:
- Research the Violin on the computer
- Discuss Violinists with other Sims
- Appreciate Classical Music on the stereo
At this level, your Sim can:
- Bow for Inspiration
- Play Traditional Songs:
- Can’t Make it So
- Flowers in June
- The Pie in the Window
- Traveling Home
At this level, your Sim can:
- Play Concerto
- Play Rock Songs:

At this level, your Sim can:

At this level, your Sim can:
- Write, Scrap, and Name Songs
- Play Swing Songs:

Violin skill cheats
When using skill cheats, type in the number of the level you want to reach. For example, putting stats.set_skill_level major_violin 7 into the cheat bar will get your Sim’s Violin skill up to level 7.PC and Mac
