Overview
Follow these steps to troubleshoot high ping and packet loss if Apex Legends is lagging.
What is ping and packet loss?
- Ping, or latency, is the time it takes for game data to be sent from your platform to the data centers and back, measured in milliseconds.
- Packet loss is the measurement of the number, or percentage, of packets that fail to successfully make the round trip to the data centers and back.
What’s high ping in Apex Legends?
Ping is generally between 50 and 150 milliseconds (ms). Ping under 100ms will keep your game running well, with ping under 50ms being particularly good. If your ping is over 100ms, you may start to experience lag.How to check ping and packet loss
You can check your ping and packet loss in-game by turning on Performance Display.- 1Go to your Settings.
- 2Under the Gameplay tab, turn on Performance Display to show frames-per-second, latency, and packet loss.
Troubleshoot lag, ping, and packet loss
Change your Apex Legends data center
- 1Open Apex Legends. Don’t select Continue.
- 2Select Data Center in the bottom-left of the launch screen.
- 3Select the new data center which is the closest location to the one you’re logged in from.
- Using a data center that’s far away can cause high ping and packet loss because your data has to travel further. Make sure to pick the data center closest to you.

What if all data centers have high ping or packet loss?
Data centers can have high ping and packet loss if there are lots of people playing, or there are issues with the Apex Legends servers. Make sure you:- check the Apex Legends server status for outages
Troubleshoot your connection
Your own connection can cause high ping and packet loss in Apex Legends. Issues can be caused by things like:- lots of people in your home or nearby using the same Wi-Fi connection
- using a wireless connection
- running lots of applications in the background of your game
- your router being blocked or far away.
