How to troubleshoot high ping and lag

High ping, packet loss, and lag can be caused by issues like distance to servers, poor Wi-Fi, or lots of people using the same network at the same time.If you’re experiencing issues, here’s what to do.
Some of these tips involve advanced networking changes. If you feel uncomfortable making these changes, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for help. For specific instructions about your hardware, make sure you follow the steps in your router’s manual.
  • Try using a wired connection. Hardwired connections can be more reliable.
    • If you’re using Wi-Fi, try hardwiring your device to your router.
  • Check your router signal. Make sure it’s out in the open with its antenna, if there is one, pointed towards your device. Keep your router as close to your device as possible.
  • Try changing your wireless channel. The one you’re using might be busy.
    • Contact your ISP for help finding and switching to another channel.
  • Check your device’s date and time is correct, as this can sometimes cause issues.
  • Try manually setting your DNS to Google Public DNS.
