Child accounts may not have access to certain features like online multiplayer modes, purchases, and social media connections. This is to ensure players under the minimum age in their country have an age-appropriate experience. Access to these features depends on the game and platform, as well as the parental controls that have been set.

When logging into Origin, you need to use your child’s EA ID instead of an email address. That’s the username you set up for them when you created their account.

This depends on the platform they’re playing on. Check out our breakdown by platform to see how you can set up parental control settings. Based on the settings you choose, you may be able to allow access to online play for your child:

The EA app and Origin

Child accounts

Child accounts don't include online modes on PC or Mac. You also can’t make purchases since there is no access to the EA app or Origin Store, so you can’t have an EA Play membership or use EA Gift Cards. Child accounts can, however, redeem game codes purchased by adult players.

Because they can’t get online, child accounts also can’t log in to our websites. Players with child accounts can use to make a case with us if they have an email address (a parent has the option to use the email address they used to validate a child account). Child account can’t use companion web apps for games, or use mobile companion apps that need an EA Account login.

They also can’t connect their games to social media or link their accounts to Steam.

Teen accounts

Teen accounts can play online. If you link your child’s teen account to yours, we have settings that allow you to set spend and playtime limits for your teen. Learn how to link your teen’s account to yours so you can set spend and playtime controls for them:

If you're having trouble with the spend controls for the EA app, you can switch back to Origin while we're still in Beta testing.

Playtime controls are only available through the EA app.

If your child is under the age of 18 years and is playing, you may also be able to set parental controls on a platform level which will be followed in our games. For example, if you disable communicating with other players in your platform parental controls, that will disable communications with other players in the EA game as well. Many of our games will selectively disable a single feature based on the parental controls set (so if you disable multiplayer through the parental controls, they won’t be able to access that feature in-game), but other titles will disable all online features.

You can adjust the parental controls so your child can only use their teen account to play the single-player, offline modes of an EA game using your platform parental controls. To learn more about platform parental controls that can be set for both child and teen accounts, see below.

Child EA Accounts can’t link to Steam accounts. This means that your child won’t be able to play EA games that need an EA Account to link to Steam.

PlayStation®5 and 4

All EA games follow the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 parental controls.

All EA games follow the Xbox family settings.

Nintendo Switch

All EA titles follow the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls™.

All EA games follow the Stadia parental controls, including privacy settings and gameplay limits.

Note that only adult EA Accounts may be linked with Stadia accounts or created through Stadia, and account linking is necessary to enable online game features. This means games that have a significant part of their gameplay devoted to online features (such as multiplayer modes in FIFA and Madden) will have limited functionality players using a child account until they are old enough to create a teen or adult EA Account.

Players should also remember that only one EA Account can be linked to a Stadia account.

Single-player games without online modes and/or games that don’t need to be linked to an EA Account aren’t affected by this limitation (such as STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order™).

Mobile games

Many countries have data protection laws that require us to make sure that children experience our games in a way that’s appropriate for their age. This is why in some of our mobile games we ask players their age and disable features which may not be appropriate for them. For example, if you are below the minimum age of digital consent in your country, you won’t be able to connect to social networks and access social features (such as chat).

What games can my child play online?

Check the EA game pack or online disclaimer on PC, the PlayStation Store (PlayStation 4 and Playstation 5), and the Xbox Store (Xbox One and Xbox X|S) to see what age is required to play online.

If your child is not able to access the online features of an EA game even though the platform level parental settings have been set to allow them to play online, it may be because the game content is Mature (M). Make sure to check the age rating on Origin or the EA app, or on the cover of the game box if you bought a physical copy.

A child can only play games using a child account until they reach the minimum ages listed below. Before a child reaches the minimum age in their country, they must play with a child account. Once they’ve reached the minimum age for their region, they’ll be able to upgrade to a teen EA Account.
