Drifting may be challenging at first, but it gets easier with more practice. As you near a tight turn, swing out wide, push down on the footbrake slightly, and use the handbrake to start the drift. The key is to keep practicing.

In some races and depending on the sponsor, you may be given challenges, like hitting a target number of drifts in exchange for rewards or higher sponsorship levels.

Top tip: You’ll have the best chance to complete these challenges on icy surfaces, like the New York ice races. Racing on ice makes it easier to slide without losing speed.

How to work assists

Assists help you establish a good grip in the game while you’re still learning. As you progress and want to pick up the speed, gradually turn off assists like traction control and automatic gears.

Turning off traction control means you might be able to make sharper turns on hairpins, while manual gear might give you more speed out of drifts.

Practice!

Practice to your heart’s content in Arcade mode. When you get stuck in other modes, dialing it back to learn the ropes in Arcade is a great way to build your confidence back up.

DIRT 5 allows cross-platform and cross-generational multiplay for public lobbies, which means you can matchmake with players playing on a different platform than you. For example, if you’re playing DIRT 5 on PlayStation 5, you can matchmake with both PS5 and PS4 players. Playing on Xbox or PC (Windows Store and Steam)? We got you too!

Please note that cross-platform matchmaking is only available for public lobbies.

How do I turn on cross-platform matchmaking?

If you’re matchmaking with a party of players, you’ll have to enable cross-platform matchmaking.

Here’s how to do this:

  1. Go to Profile.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open the Online menu to turn on cross-platform matchmaking.

DIRT 5 lets up to four friends play together in split-screen mode, whether you’re on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC. Find out how to set up split-screen play here.

Play online to earn currency and rewards to spend on customization items for your profile, like player cards and lanyard variants, or use the rewards to unlock new stickers and options for custom liveries.
