Playable Sims will always be adults. That means you can’t play as your Sims’ children, but you can interact with them.
When the Birthday Cake icon shows up over your Sims’ head, it means you’ve got the cue to Age Up. Just tap the icon and you’ll head to the Age Up menu. The Birthday Cake icon will show up every now and then to remind you that your Sim is ready to Age Up. This birthday happens when your Sim has reached a certain milestone in their lives and will allow you to choose a new trait. Don’t forget to throw a party for their Birthday!
If you don’t Age Up using the icon, you can still do it at any time by going to your Sims’ Traits tab.
Traits give all sorts of bonuses to your Sims that help them in different ways. Some increase chances for XP or daily login bonuses, and others are better for certain kinds of events.
They'll give special bonuses while you’re playing, like the chance to earn more Simoleons or get more Hobby XP.
There are a couple of ways you can give your Sims traits.
Your Sims that you create as adults will have four total traits by the time they retire. Sims with the Good Upbringing trait will end up with five traits.

Sims can retire once you reach level 16 and they have maxed out their traits, but only if you want them to. Your Sims will let you know when they are ready to retire.
When your Sims retire, they will leave behind an Heirloom for your other Sims. These Heirlooms can be used to earn new traits, career levels, and hobbies. You can also purchase Heirlooms in the store.
Have duplicate Heirlooms? You can sell them to get more Heirloom Tickets.
They won’t be gone! They’ll still hang around your lot so you can interact with them, but they just become non-playable characters (NPCs).
Your Sims can also be mentored by retired Sims so they can earn career and hobby XP. Learn more about mentoring and Family Events.
And when they retire, you’ll get Heirlooms from them that will help you unlock more things to do in the game. It’s a win-win all around!
When you get an Heirloom after retirement, you’ll be taken to the Heirloom screen in the store. Here you can:
A new pop-up appears when you have a full set of 8 non-playable characters (NPCs) in your household. It shows up when you’re trying to add a new NPC, like having a baby, marrying an NPC, or retiring a Sim.
Through the pop-up you can manually remove any NPCs, making room for new ones.
