Play F1® 22 with steering wheels and VR headsets

PC VR headsets

For the first time ever, you can get in the driver’s seat in F1® 22 on PC with a VR headset. These are the supported headsets:

• Oculus Quest 2 + Link
• Oculus Rift S
• HTC Cosmos
• HTC Vive Pro
• Valve Index
• HP Reverb G2

There are also headsets that are known to work, but can run into compatibility issues:

• Oculus Rift (Original)
• Oculus Quest 1 + Link

Finding the right settings for your setup

It’s best to double check that F1® 22 is working well for you in non-VR before running the game in VR:

1. Start the game without VR.
2. Go to Game Options.
3. Open Settings.
4. Select Graphic Settings.
5. Choose Benchmark Mode. Running a benchmark will give you what your current frame rate is in-game.

To improve your frame rate, try:

• Running the game without VR
• Updating your display driver and device drivers (wheel, etc)
• Disconnecting your controllers to isolate the issue and see if it's related

When everything is smooth in non-VR, start the game in VR mode.

If the frame rate is too low, check the following:

• If your headset supports multiple refresh rates, try starting with the lowest available refresh rate before increasing it. This gives your graphics card more time to render the frame.
• In VR Settings, the Scale should be around 100%.
• In Graphics Settings, set Level Detail to VR Ultra-Low and see if you’re able to achieve the desired frame rate before increasing the setting.
• In Graphics Settings, go to Video Mode, and Anti-aliasing* to enable Dynamic Resolution** with the TAA-only option. This actively modifies the image resolution to keep up with the desired refresh rate.

*Note 1: If you played with the Anti-aliasing mode (TAA only, DLSS, FSR), it's possible that this can trigger a memory issue from Windows that can affect performance for a few minutes. Make sure to wait or reboot to ensure your benchmark will be valid.

**Note 2: VR headsets have a "built-in v-sync" mechanism. If your headset is running at 90Hz and you only provide frames at 80fps, it will throttle down to 45Hz to give your graphic cards a chance to recover. Avoid that by reducing the requested quality level or use Dynamic Scaling.

Custom settings

If these settings are not important to your race experience, setting these to Low can increase performance:

• Crowd
• Ground cover
• Particles
• Skid Marks
• Post processing

Steam

F1® 22 VR requires SteamVR to be installed on your PC. While the game will launch SteamVR, it’s recommended to launch SteamVR before running the game. Launching it before the game will let you make sure that the headset is shown as detected.

The EA app

Steam and SteamVR are required to launch F1® 22 VR on the EA app.

Some issues can be fixed by:

• Uninstalling and reinstalling SteamVR
• Uninstalling your video driver (suggest using DDU) and reinstalling latest drivers

Black screen in VR

Some players only see a black screen when in VR. This is most often with the original Oculus Rift (not S) or Quest 1. It can be resolved by:

• Updating your graphics card drivers
• Only selecting TAA only or TAA Fidelity FX Sharpening in the Anti-aliasing option
• Making your Virtual Monitor Windowed (not full screen)
• Disabling Stencil mesh in the in-game VR options has been known to help
• Setting your virtual monitor resolution to 1280x1024

If you get stuck, we recommend that you delete your hardware settings directory to reset the settings to default values the next time you launch the game.

To find the hardware settings directory, go to My Games > F1 22. Delete the directory folder to reset your settings.

“Not Wearing Headset” message  

If you get a “Not Wearing Headset” message when launching the game, take off your headset and put it aside for 30 seconds, pick it up again and the game should detect the active headset.
