There are differences between the 32-bit Legacy Edition and 64-bit versions of The Sims 4. You’ll want to choose which one works best for your computer.

As of November 2019, we no longer support The Sims 4 on Non-Metal OS for Mac or 32-bit for PC.

If you already own The Sims 4 and can’t upgrade your operating system to Apple’s Metal or PC’s 64-bit, we granted you The Sims 4: Legacy Edition. Head to Answers HQ to learn more. New Sims 4 players won’t be eligible for the Legacy Edition.

The Mac version of The Sims 4 has always been 64-bit. If your Mac meets the other system requirements, you don’t have to worry about this one.

What’s the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows?

All modern versions of Windows are available in 32-bit or 64-bit flavors.

Here’s a breakdown of the main differences between them:

  • 32-bit Windows can only run 32-bit applications.
  • 64-bit Windows can run 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
  • If you’re using Windows 7, 8.1, or 10, you’re most likely already using the 64-bit version of Windows.
  • 32-bit Windows only counts up to a maximum of 4GB of memory (RAM). Windows uses some of that memory for itself and your graphics card might, too. That means a 32-bit version of Windows can only use what’s left over, even if you have the full 4GB installed.
  • If you run an application on 32-bit Windows that tries to use more than 4GB of RAM, it will crash.
  • The computer won’t see, and can’t use, anything over 4GB. So, if you install more than 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit version of Windows, it won’t make any difference.
  • 64-bit Windows has no real memory limit. Instead, if you have a 64-bit computer, you’re limited by how much RAM your system board (the motherboard in your computer) can handle. 64-bit Windows PCs usually have over 4GB of RAM installed as standard.

What does this have to do with The Sims 4?

We’ve had a 64-bit version of The Sims 4 available since December 2015. Since then, you can install and run the 64-bit version.

As of November 2019, we no longer support The Sims 4 on Non-Metal mac OS machines or PC 32-bit Operating Systems. For these systems, we have made available the Legacy Edition of The Sims 4. It won’t be available for new Simmers, only people who already own the game before.

Can I run the 64-bit version on my computer?

You can, if you’re running 64-bit Windows and you have 4GB of RAM or more.

Not sure about that? Here’s how to check:

  1. On Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. This brings up a window that shows info about your system, including your processor, RAM, and operating system.
    • If you’re on Windows 10, you can search for This PC then right-click it in the search results.
  2. Check the System type line to see if it says your computer has a 64-bit or a 32-bit operating system.
  3. If it says 64-bit operating system, double check the amount of RAM listed.
    • If you have 4GB or more RAM, you can run the 64-bit version of The Sims 4
    • If it’s 32-bit you should run the Legacy Edition of The Sims 4.

Windows Vista and Windows XP cannot run the 64-bit version of The Sims 4.

How can I switch to the 64-bit version of The Sims 4?

  1. In Origin, right-click on The Sims 4 tile in My Game Library.
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. Click on Advanced Launch Options.
  4. Origin screenshot of The Sims 4 Digital Deluxe Properties menu
  5. From the pull-down menu under When launching this game… choose The Sims™ 4 64 Bit, then hit Save.
  6. Origin will download and install the 64-bit version of the game for you.

I received the following dialog when starting the game, what does it mean?

warning message about not meeting required specifications

That means you have less than 4GB of memory (RAM) in your computer, or you’re running Windows Vista.

If you see this message, we recommend you switch back to the 32-bit version of The Sims 4.

Ok, how do I switch back to the 32-bit version of The Sims 4?

  1. In Origin, right-click on The Sims 4 tile in My Game Library.
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. Click on Advanced Launch Options.

  4. From the pull-down menu under When launching this game… choose The Sims™ 4 32 Bit Legacy Edition, then hit Save.
  5. Origin will download and install the 32-bit version of the game for you.

If you use the 32-bit Legacy Edition version on a 64-bit computer, your game is more likely to crash and have other problems. Using the 64-bit version will help limit those crashes.
