Find out how to access the Public Test Server (PTS) to help test STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™.

The Star Wars: The Old Republic Public Test server is sometimes available to subscribers for large-scale testing of upcoming game content, especially group content like new PvP maps or Operations.

If you want to help test upcoming changes to the game when the PTS is open, you'll need to download the Public Test client. You can also copy one (or more) of your characters to the PTS to play on them during testing.

  • Content on the PTS is not final, it’s not guaranteed to be exactly the same when it arrives on regular game servers.
  • The PTS is not localized into French or German.
  • Your progress on the PTS is separate from your progress on any other server.
    • Levels gained, loot won, and choices made with a copied character on the PTS are not reflected on your main server.
    • There is no way to copy a character back from the PTS to another server.
  • Characters on the PTS are often "wiped" (deleted) after a testing phase.
  • Don’t use Outlander Character tokens to create characters on the PTS.
  • For some tests, there is a levelling terminal on the Imperial and Republic Fleets on the PTS:
    • Use this terminal to boost your character's level.
    • You might also get gear tokens from this terminal. Trade them in for gear to help you test elder game content and class balance.
    • Don’t use the Master’s Datacron to boost a character to 70 on the PTS.
  • If you’re taking part in closed testing, you have to accept a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before you can download the PTS client. This means you shouldn’t talk about the game version on the PTS anywhere other than on the PTS forums. If you’re taking part in closed testing, do not stream content from the PTS or talk about it on social media.

On Steam:

  1. If you’re a SWTOR Subscriber, log into Steam.
    • If you’re not a Subscriber you won’t be able to log into the PTS.
  2. Download the PTS client from the Star Wars: The Old Republic page on the Steam store.
  3. Follow the instructions onscreen to start the download and installation.
  4. Once it’s downloaded, sign in as usual to play.

Using the SW:TOR.com launcher:

  1. Log in to the Star Wars: The Old Republic launcher using your username, password and Security Key code (if you have a security key).
  2. Click the Settings button (gears icon) in the bottom left corner of the launcher.
  3. Under Enable Public Test Server Access, select Yes.
  4. Click Save.
  5. If the PTS is open and your account has access to it, the lower left corner of the launcher will now have two buttons. Click the button next to settings (it has two arrows coming out of a circle on it).
  6. Under Pick an Environment select Public Test.
  7. Click Next to begin downloading the Public Test Server client
  8. When the download has finished, click Play.

You can only copy characters to the Public Test Server during an active testing period - please check https://www.swtor.com/test-center to find out if testing is currently underway before trying to copy a character.

To copy one or more of your characters from a live server to the Public Test Server (PTS):

  1. Log into your account at www.swtor.com.
  2. Click on My SWTOR, then My Account.
  3. Click on Public Test Character Copy.
  4. This will open up a page displaying the servers you currently have characters on, click on the region tabs along the top of the server list to navigate between regions.
  5. Once you’ve located your server, click on it and the panel below will populate with the names of your characters on that server.
  6. This window will display a maximum of twelve characters, and the characters displayed can be sorted by clicking on Level to display them in increasing or decreasing order by their current level.
  7. To copy a character, click on the Copy Character button across from their name.

Character copy copies your character only. It does not copy:

  • Guild membership
  • Items currently listed on the Galactic Trade Network
  • Items, credits, or mail in their mailbox
  • Friends / ignore lists
  • Legacy name - your characters will use whichever Legacy Name you have chosen on the PTS, if you have not previously unlocked your Legacy there you will be asked to choose a Legacy name as soon as you log in on a copied character.
  • You will see a warning message if your character is in a guild, has items listed on the GTN or has new unread in-game mail on their live server. Copying your character will not affect any of these items on the live server, the warning is just to remind you that they won’t be copied across to the PTS with your character. Confirm the copy request if you are asked to, and your character will be copied for you. Copying a character usually takes less than an hour. If we think it’ll take longer, you can check the time-frame in the Copy Restrictions panel on the Character Copy page.
  • You can copy as many of your characters to the PTS as you like, within your character limits, but you’ll need to copy them one by one.
  • If your copied character’s name is already taken on the PTS, you will see a prompt to rename your character before you can log in on them.
  • Character Copying is completely automated, so our Customer Service team can’t help if you run into any problems.
  • If you’ve tried to copy a character after multiple times without success, please post in the Public Test Server forums to let our development team know.
