Advanced Look Controls (ALC)
Advanced Look Controls (ALC) are settings that give you greater control over aiming and movement. You can change your default ALC settings from the main menu.
Aim assist
Aim assist helps you aim your weapon in the game. Players who use a PC can have a reaction time advantage over console players who don’t use aim assist, so aim assist helps to better balance the game.
Aim assist should be automatically turned on when you start playing. You can find out how to turn aim assist off here.
Aim Down Sights (ADS)
ADS is a method that helps you aim with more control. It refers to aiming in first-person perspective to get a better view of enemies.
Apex Coins (AC)
Apex Coins are a premium in-game currency which you can use to buy Apex Packs*, items in the Rotating Store, and new Legends. Find out more about Apex Coins here.
Apex Packs*
Apex Packs* provide cosmetic items or crafting currency. You can get them in three ways:

Artifacts
Artifacts are a subclass of Mythic type items.
Away From Keyboard (AFK)
When a player is away from their keyboard.
Badges
Show off your skills and customize your profile with badges. Badges are unlockable cosmetics that you can put on your banner. They show that you’ve completed specific Challenges or have certain skills.
Banner Poses
Banner Poses are cosmetics that change how your Legend poses on your banner.
Batt
A batt is a shield battery item that restores your armor.
Battle Pass
The Battle Pass gives players the chance to earn rewards, like unique cosmetics and Apex Packs*, from the current Season.
Every player can unlock some of these items each Season through normal play. Players who choose to buy the Battle Pass can earn everything available that Season. The Battle Pass can only be acquired through the in-game store with Apex Coins.
Battle Royale (BR)
Battle Royale is a game mode where players compete to be the last squad or player standing on the map. Play in pairs, groups of three, or queue to be a solo player.
Bubble
Gibraltar’s tactical ability, Dome of Protection, creates a bubble that protects him
Challenges
Challenges are in-game tasks that you can complete to earn rewards. Challenges can be daily, weekly, or linked to an event.
Cracked
Cracked is a term for broken armor.
Crafting Metals
Crafting Metals can be used to craft specific cosmetic items such as Legend skins, Weapon skins, and more. They’re dropped in Apex Packs*.
Cross-play
Cross-play lets you squad up and play with friends. Follow these steps to add friends in Apex Legends.
Cross Progression
Cross Progression lets you share your game progress across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Learn more about Cross Progression in this article.
Evac Tower
An Evac Tower launches a rocket which explodes into a balloon. You can use Evac Towers to move around the map by climbing up them and diving back down.
Events
Events bring exciting new gameplay changes, purchasable cosmetics, and free progression content to Apex Legends.
Finisher
Finishers are final moves that Legends can perform to eliminate a downed enemy. Every Legend has different finishers, and a special cutscene will play when you perform one.
Firing Range
A practice area where you can test out weapons, ammo, and new Legends.
FPS
Frames-per-second (FPS) helps determine how smooth your gameplay is. Most players aim for around 60 FPS as a standard in Apex Legends. You can learn more about how to increase your FPS here.

Gear
Pieces of gear are in-game items that’ll help you in the game. Gear includes items like helmets, weapon attachments, and backpage upgrades.
Gifts
Gifting in Apex Legends lets you send and receive items like skins, banners, and more to and from your friends.

Heat shield
Heat shields are deployable items that protect you from damage from the Ring.
Heirloom Shards
Heirloom Shards are used to craft items from the Heirloom Store. You can only find them in Apex Packs*.
Helmet
Helmets reduce the damage you take from headshots.
Hop-ups
Hop-ups are weapon attachments that can improve your weapon’s performance.
Hot drop
A hot drop is an area of a map that attracts a lot of players.
Jumpmaster
One person in a squad is chosen to be Jumpmaster. They pick where your squad lands on the map.
Knockdown shield
Knockdown shields protect you and block damage for a temporary amount of time. You can only use them when you’re knocked down.
Legends
Legends are the characters that you can play as. They all have their own skills and abilities, so make sure to try different Legends to see what they can do. If you want to learn more about Legends’ abilities, read our Legend abilities guide.

Legend Banner
Legends carry Legend Banners and drop them when they die. Only their teammates can pick them up, and taking one to a Respawn Beacon will bring that Legend back to life.
Legend Tokens
Legends Tokens are used to buy Legends, unlock recolors for Legendary skins, and reroll Daily Challenges. They’re mostly earned through completing matches.
Legend Upgrade System
Upgrade your Legend’s armor and abilities throughout a match with the Legend Upgrade System. Learn more about how the Legend Upgrade System works here.
Limited-time mode
An event mode that’s only available for a short period of time and contains unique game modes.
Loot
Items you find in the game are called loot. You can find loot in Supply Bins and around the map.
Map
Maps are where you fight in Apex Legends. You can learn more about them here.
Map rotation
The maps you play on rotate. Every Season, three maps will be in rotation and are only available for a limited time.
Med kits
Med kits restore your health.
Mixtape
A rotating playlist of some of the fan-favorite game modes. Modes rotate every hour.
Mobile Respawn Beacon
You can use Mobile Respawn Beacons to create a Respawn Beacon at your location.
Mythics
Mythics are the rarest items in Apex Legends. They include items like Heirlooms and Prestige skins.
Non Battle Royale (NBR)
Some Challenges have NBR, meaning Non Battle Royale, marked next to them. If you see NBR, it means you can complete this Challenge in other modes.
Patch notes
Patch notes are updates to the game. They can include things like new Legends, map changes, game updates, and more.

Phoenix kit
A phoenix kit fully restores your health and shields.
Ping
Ping is the measure of how long it takes for game data to be sent from your platform to the data centers and back. Bad ping can lead to lower accuracy when you shoot in your game.
Point of Interest (POI)
Points of Interest are named landmarks on the map. They usually contain large amounts of loot and Supply Bins, so try to land at them when you start a match.
Poke
When you keep attacking an enemy from afar to damage their health and armor over time.
Private match
Invite up to 60 players and 5 observers to a standard game. Private Match requires cross-play and doesn’t earn you XP or other progression.
Quips
Quips are unique phrases that Legends say.
Ranked Points (RP)
You’ll get Ranked Points (RP) based on your performance in a Ranked game. Learn more about RP here.
Rarity colors
An item’s color tells you how rare it is.
Respawn Beacon
Respawn Beacons can bring downed teammates back to life. To revive a player, you’ll need to take their Legend Banner to a Respawn Beacon.
Ring
The Ring is an area on your map that shrinks throughout the match. If you’re outside the Ring, you’ll take damage.
Season
Each Season comes with new content. This can include new Legends, fresh loot, and special events that change the Games. Plus, every Season comes with its own Battle Pass, which lets you unlock tons of unique content as you level up.
Shield kits
Shield kits restore your armor.
Shield Core
In Apex Legends, your armor is fueled by a Shield Core. Learn more about Shield Cores here.
Skins
You can use skins to customize how your Legends and weapons look. You can get skins in Apex Packs*, the Battle Pass, and Twitch or Prime rewards. You can also create some skins with Crafting Metals.
Starter kit
In Battle Royale, every Legend drops with a starter kit. This kit includes a level 1 helmet, a level 1 evo shield, a level 1 knockdown shield, plus two syringes and two shield cells.
Supply Bins
Supply Bins are where you can find loot like weapons, ammo, helmets, and more in-game.
Survival item
Survival items are items that help protect Legends. They include heat shields, Evac Towers, and Mobile Respawn Beacons.
Syringe
Syringes restore your health.
Tags
Tags are a visual flare you can add to your username. Learn how to set your Tag here.
Training
Training is the opening game tutorial. You need to play this before you can join matches.
Ultimate Accelerant
Ultimate Accelerants restore your ultimate energy. This charges your Legend’s ultimate ability.
Vault Key
Vault Keys give you access to vaults full of loot.
Zip Up Balloon (Zip, Zips)
You can use Zip Up Balloons, also known as Zip or Zips, to move quickly across the map. Use them to catch up to your squad or get back in the Ring.
